Georgian Windows

The Georgian window style is one defined by balance, proportion and timeless architectural order. First popularised during the Georgian period (1714-1837) and modelled on Ancient Greek and Roman architecture principles, this distinctive variety remains one of the most enduring and sought-after window designs in the UK, valued for its elegance, symmetry and understated refinement.

We specialise in crafting bespoke timber Georgian windows that honour these historic principles while meeting the performance expectations of modern living. Whether you are restoring a period property, replacing existing windows, or introducing Georgian character into a new build, our approach ensures architectural authenticity without compromise.

The hallmarks of Georgian window design

Traditional Georgian window designs emphasise symmetry and evenly spaced glazing, creating a calm, ordered appearance that complements classical architecture. This is even reflected in the precise detailing. Slim sightlines, carefully considered glazing bars, and well-balanced frames are essential for creating a window design that enhances the character of a building without dominating the façade.

Georgian Bars

Glazing bars are one of the most distinctive features of Georgian windows and play a critical role in achieving an authentic appearance. Each window in a Georgian building contained multiple panes of glass, owing to the limitations in manufacturing at the time, and these horizontal and vertical bars held them in place within a larger frame. As glass manufacturing improved and larger panes were introduced and became more economical, this method would lose popularity.

In modern manufacturing, bars can be added as a decorative element that gives the impression of multiple panes of glass within a larger window frame. They are typically crafted from the same material as the rest of the window.

There are several types, each suited to different properties and planning requirements:

  • True divided lights, where each pane is individually glazed, offer the most traditional appearance and are often required for listed buildings.
  • Applied (astragal) bars are fixed to the glass surface, creating the visual effect of multiple panes while allowing for improved thermal performance.
  • Internal spacer bars sit within sealed units and provide a cleaner aesthetic, often used in modern Georgian-style windows.

Types and styles of Georgian windows

    Georgian sash windows

Georgian box sash windows are among the most iconic expressions of the style. Traditionally vertically sliding, they are commonly found in townhouses, terraces, and formal period homes. Their appearance and classic glazing make them particularly well-suited to listed buildings and conservation areas.

    Georgian casement windows

Georgian casement windows are typically side-hinged and are often associated with rural properties, country houses and less formal period buildings. While simpler in operation, they retain the same emphasis on symmetry and proportion.

These windows can be inward or outward opening, depending on architectural requirements, and are ideal for properties seeking a Georgian aesthetic with a more traditional casement format.

Georgian design is not limited to historic properties. Many modern homes adopt Georgian proportions to create a sense of heritage, balance and visual longevity. For new builds or contemporary renovations, Georgian-style spring sash windows allow for greater flexibility while still adhering to classical design principles. This approach delivers the elegance of Georgian architecture alongside modern performance standards and design freedoms.

Why timber is essential for authentic Georgian windows

Timber remains the material of choice for Georgian windows, both historically and today. Its natural strength allows for finer profiles and slimmer sightlines, which are crucial to maintaining correct proportions. Unlike alternative materials, timber can also be easily repaired, adapted and refinished over time, making it particularly well-suited to long-term ownership and often the only choice for period properties. When sourced responsibly, it is also one of the most sustainable building materials available.

    Modern performance without compromise

Georgian windows are rooted in tradition, but modern expectations demand high levels of comfort, efficiency and security. This is why Georgian-style windows made today are engineered to deliver excellent thermal performance, advanced glazing options and robust security features. Draught reduction, noise insulation and long-term durability are all integral to designs, ensuring that traditional appearance never comes at the expense of modern living standards.

    Can Georgian windows be double-glazed?

Yes. Advances in glazing technology mean that slim-profile double glazing can now be incorporated into Georgian timber windows without compromising proportions or sightlines. When designed correctly, Georgian double-glazed windows retain their traditional appearance while offering substantial improvements in thermal efficiency, noise reduction and security.
