What defines a Victorian window?

Victorian architecture (1837–1901) introduced some of the most recognisable window styles seen across London, Surrey, Bristol, and the South West. While designs varied, a few features became distinctive:

Tall, slim sash windows

The classic Victorian sash window is vertically sliding and elegant in its proportions. These windows often feature two moving sashes and can be weighted (box sash) or spring-balanced (spring sash).

Narrower glazing bars

Compared to earlier Georgian windows, Victorian styles moved toward fewer, larger panes with slim glazing bars or none at all. This not only allowed more light into homes, but was also a sign of wealth because it indicated the homeowner could afford large windows at a time when glass was expensive.

Decorative horns

Decorative horns were introduced to strengthen the frame when larger panes became popular. They’re now a common hallmark of Victorian sashes and an important detail in authentic replacements.

Stained glass and bay windows

In more decorative Victorian homes, stained glass panels and large timber bay windows became prominent features. Again, this was both practical and a wealth indicator.

While sash windows dominate Victorian properties, some later homes incorporated flush casements, especially in rear extensions or service areas.

Why timber is essential for authentic Victorian windows

Because Victorian windows were nearly always timber, modern replacements using uPVC or aluminium rarely replicate exactly what’s required for period homes. In some areas, timber will be the only acceptable option for renovating the windows on a Victorian property.
