Stained Glass Windows Nine Zero

What defines a Victorian window?

Victorian architecture (1837โ€“1901) introduced some of the most recognisable window styles seen across London, Surrey, Bristol, and the South West. While designs varied, a few features became distinctive:

Tall, slim sash windows

The classic Victorian sash window is vertically sliding and elegant in its proportions. These windows often feature two moving sashes and can be weighted (box sash) or spring-balanced (spring sash).

Narrower glazing bars

Compared to earlier Georgian windows, Victorian styles moved toward fewer, larger panes with slim glazing bars or none at all. This not only allowed more light into homes, but was also a sign of wealth because it indicated the homeowner could afford large windows at a time when glass was expensive.

Decorative horns

Decorative horns were introduced to strengthen the frame when larger panes became popular. Theyโ€™re now a common hallmark of Victorian sashes and an important detail in authentic replacements.

Stained glass and bay windows

In more decorative Victorian homes, stained glass panels and large timber bay windows became prominent features. Again, this was both practical and a wealth indicator.

Types and styles of Victorian windows

We supply a range of timber windows suitable for Victorian properties, each custom-built to match your projectโ€™s needs and the propertyโ€™s architectural details. Whatever style the property requires, all our Victorian windows are handmade using FSC-certified timber and precision detailing that stays faithful to the original character of the building.

Spring sash windows

Spring sash windows are ideal for properties requiring a cost-effective yet traditionally styled solution. They use discreet spring mechanisms instead of weights.

Benefits:

  • Suitable for homes where there isnโ€™t space for a full box system
  • Smooth operation
  • Slim, elegant sightlines
  • Perfect for sympathetically styled new builds

Box sash windows

This is the most authentic choice for Victorian properties, with the design using traditional weights and pulleys.

Benefits:

  • True-to-period design
  • Excellent longevity and smooth sliding action
  • Ideal for listed buildings and heritage restorations
  • Fully customisable horns, glazing bars, paint finishes, and mouldings

Flush casement windows

While sash windows dominate Victorian properties, some later homes incorporated flush casements, especially in rear extensions or service areas.

Benefits:

  • Clean, understated look
  • Can mimic traditional sightlines with period-appropriate hardware
  • Excellent thermal performance with a heritage aesthetic

Why timber is essential for authentic Victorian windows

Because Victorian windows were nearly always timber, modern replacements using uPVC or aluminium rarely replicate exactly whatโ€™s required for period homes. In some areas, timber will be the only acceptable option for renovating the windows on a Victorian property.

Choosing timber for modern replacements and new projects and developments means offering:

  • True Authenticity: Modern materials canโ€™t replicate the crisp profiles, putty lines, or heritage mouldings of timber frames.
  • Superior Insulation: High-performance timber paired with modern glazing dramatically improves energy efficiency without compromising appearance.
  • Longevity: Engineered timber resists warping, swelling, and decay, especially with specialist coatings.
  • Refined Aesthetics: Timber offers sharper detailing and can be colour-matched to the property or conservation guidelines.
