Case Study – Dilke Street, Chelsea

  • Client: Private homeowner
  • Location: Dilke Street, Chelsea, London
  • Project Type: Period property renovation

Nine Zero supplied bespoke timber windows and doors for the renovation of a period property on Dilke Street in Chelsea, London. The project involved a full replacement of the existing traditional windows and doors, with new products designed to retain the proportions and detailing of the property while improving thermal performance and security.

Our work included timber sash windows throughout the property, timber French doors to the rear, and a bespoke timber entrance door. All products were coordinated with a RAL 9016 Traffic White finish and satin chrome ironmongery to provide consistency across the project.

Our work with period properties

Projects involving period properties require careful consideration of both the existing architecture and the performance expected from modern windows and doors.

Nine Zero produces bespoke timber products to suit individual project specifications, allowing dimensions, glazing, finishes, ironmongery and architectural details to be tailored to the building. For the Dilke Street project, this meant creating replacement windows and doors that worked with the property’s established proportions rather than introducing standardised products that could compromise its appearance.

Our approach also allowed modern improvements to insulation, security, and everyday operation to be incorporated without losing the propertyโ€™s traditional characteristics.

Scope of work

The project involved the supply of a coordinated range of bespoke products:

  • Timber sash windows
  • Timber French doors
  • A bespoke timber entrance door
  • Satin chrome ironmongery
  • RAL 9016 Traffic White finishes

The timber sash windows were designed around the proportions of the property’s original features. Precise measurements were particularly important because the new windows needed to work with the existing window frames without negatively affecting their structure or appearance.

At the rear of the property, bespoke timber French doors were specified to provide access between the living space and garden. A slim-profile design helped maximise the glazed area and natural light while remaining appropriate for the existing architecture.

The entrance door was also custom-made around the property’s traditional exterior. Decorative mouldings provided the required detailing, while modern hardware and a multi-point locking system upgraded security.

All timber elements were produced using sustainably sourced, FSC-certified timber. The windows and doors were also designed to improve insulation and reduce draughts compared with the products they replaced.

What our clients say

โ€œOur building is in an ANOB, world heritage site, and an SSSI. We wanted windows that would look authentic, were affordable, and would meet the challenges of a coastal location โ€“ saline air, high UV, and strong winds. The material had to withstand corrosion, be adjustable over its lifetime, and, with normal maintenance, last 30 years or longer. We considered plastic and aluminium windows but were not convinced they could meet the criteria.

We decided on Nine Zero after visiting the workshop in Cornwall and meeting the team. Communication was important in determining the design and final detailing of the windows. We were happy with the process and the resulting windows look great.โ€

James Burton, Director, Bere Property Ltd

โ€œNine Zero were recommended to us by a local timber business owner for lead time: the order process was simple, people were friendly on the phone, and we were delighted with the quality. A friend who has 35 yearsโ€™ experience of running a high-end timber business was also very impressed.โ€

Mr Nick Denman, Hastings, England

"What drew me to Nine-Zero was the product, and that its manufactured in the UK, it quickly became about the people as much as the product! The personal touch, the close-knit team of people who know what they are doing and the consistent service levels."

Elliott Martin, Oxford Trade Frames Ltd

"We recently had our windows replaced and couldnโ€™t be happier with the results. The fact that theyโ€™re made right here in the UK, in Cornwall was a big plus for us โ€” itโ€™s great to support local craftsmanship. The quality is outstanding, with a solid, well-finished look and feel. In addition, the delivery went smoothly with no issues whatsoever. Highly recommend this company for anyone looking for reliable, high-quality timber windows made close to home."

Florence Holzapfel

"Nine Zero offered beautiful, yet affordable timber windows and doors and were able to customise a few trickier fitouts that other suppliers couldn't. What stood out most was their knowledge and support in making non-standard items work in line with the architects' drawings."

Ketie van der Wateren, Co-founder,ย flow design & manage

"What stood out most about Nine Zero was their attention to detail and the level of support we received from day one. Steve and his team were, proactive, transparent, and genuinely invested in helping us & the client team get the best result. Every interaction felt collaborative โ€” he listened carefully, offered expert advice, and delivered exactly what they promised. The service is the very least we expect from a subcontractor or supplier & Nine Zero understood this from the outset."

Sandra Phaup, Head of Design, Morgan Rae Ltd

Challenges and achievements

One of the main requirements of the Dilke Street project was achieving a consistent finish across several different window and door products while ensuring each remained appropriate for its particular position within the property. The sash windows required accurate sizing to work with the existing frames and retain the traditional window proportions. This meant the replacements had to be designed specifically around theย  building rather than relying on standard dimensions.

Coordination was also important across the different products. The sash windows, French doors and entrance door were all finished in RAL 9016 Traffic White, with satin chrome fittings selected throughout. This provided consistency between the individual elements and helped the new joinery sit naturally within the wider renovation.

The completed project retained the period appearance of the Chelsea property while providing the practical benefits expected from modern timber windows and doors, including improved thermal performance, reduced draughts and enhanced security.
